Lesson 10: Task 1 (Listening and Speaking)

Pre-Task 1: In groups of four discuss the following questions:

  1. Have you ever participated in a meeting? What was it about? What was your role in it?


  1. Are meetings common in your profession? If so, what types of meetings are they usually - one-on-one or group meetings?

Pre-Task 2: Listen to a talk about meetings. List eight elements of an effective meeting mentioned by the speaker. (Click **HERE** to listen to the audio. Audio 6.1 volume 2 )

Pre-Task 3: Guess or look up the meanings of the following expressions. Make your own sentences with each one. Discuss which expressions refer to actions taken at the beginning, middle or end of a meeting.

Task: In group of eight, role-play a monthly meeting. One of you is new to the company. Others should assume roles such as a manager /chair, time-keeper, social committee secretary etc. Each member gets a different card with a different role. Take notes as you discuss.

Post-Task Analysis: Listen to a presentation about vocal qualities in public speaking and take notes. What is the area you need to work on?

Get into groups of four (make two groups from the previous group of eight) and discuss if your group used the following expressions (Refer to the handout given by your instructor). Who used them? What was the function?

Post-Practice: Work in pairs. Practice your part of the meeting you completed during the task stage today. Record you voice using a Digital Voice Recorder or your own cell phone. Play back and listen to your tone, voice, pitch, rate, fluency etc. Make changes as necessary.

Step 1: Add / invite your classmates to your friends circle on Skype.
Step 2: Send messages to schedule a Skype call with as many of your classmates. Invite your instructor as well.
Step 3: Based on the feedback you received from your friends and your instructor, review today’s speaking task.
Step 4: Make Skype conference call to practice today’s speaking task.
Important: You will receive a feedback on your Skype call in the next class.

Lesson 10: Task 2 (Reading and Writing)



Pre-task: Discuss the following questions in small groups:
  • What is a point-form outline?
  • How is it helpful?
  • Where do you use it?

Writing task: Use the agenda you looked at in the beginning of the class today and your notes from the monthly meeting to prepare a point form outline.

Task Reporting: Instructor invites 3-4 learners to present their in-class writing to the class. Learners put their writing on document sharing camera ( ELMO), the class read the work silently and then the presenter shares his/her reflections.
